If you have not recognized this flower, here is what this post is about: you are about meet a flower that you can watch openning up within a minute or so, and you can oberserve many of them blooming one after the other, when the sun goes down. The time it does this also concides with the time of the 4th “call to prayer” time for a day, for Muslims. You can hear the imam’s call to prayer from the local mosque and watch this beauty open up; well that really is amazing.The pics below are taken one after the other; I assure you that I have not sat there all day long to watch it open up ;)

It is a perannial that can grow up to a meter (yard), and the buds resemble okras. Every bud opens once, and that flower lasts only until next morning, until the sun gets hot. So, when the weather is misty, they may stay open longer than a day and you will get to enjoy many of them open in your garden.We learned this flower’s name from the family we got it, “Call to prayer’, but after a recent internet search I realized it is called “Evenining primrose” in English or “Oenothera” in botanics world. It is also said to have some herbal uses.The first time we have planted it, we only have received couple of roots. Now it spreaded around (not like a weed, but still it spreaded around without our help.) It grows in our mountain house, which is covered with snow in winters and also in Mersin, which is hot and humid during summers. All it needs is adequate water.As you may know, Ramadan is observed 10 days ahead of previous year’s start day. When I was a child it used to be in summer times. We used to enjoy watching this flower blooming when we werew breaking our fast, which happens to be at sundown, and marked by the 4th call to prayer of the day.The film below is taken during a recent visit home. I recommend you watch it only if you have high speed connection, it is 10MB. At the background you can hear the call to prayer, as it is announced from the local mosque, and my family talking! :)

Fethiye’cigim, tek kelimeyle harika bir sey bu. Izlerken tüylerim diken diken oldu. Galiba dalin arkasindan bir cicek daha aciyormus. Hayretler icindeyim… Baska ülkelerde de yetisiyor mu acaba bu cicek?

Işıl ve Mine; gerçekten çok büyülenmemek mümkün değil. Demin sonunda bir araştırma yaptım ve İngilizce adını da buldum ‘Evening primrose’. Benim yaşadığım yerde de geçen sene akşam üstü yürüyüşü esnasında görmüştüm, eminim yetiştiği yerler kısıtlı değildir.

Fethiye, sahane birsey inanki büyülendim ve isin garip tarafi bu cicek bendede var ama adinin ezan sesi oldugunu bilmiyordum Aksam sefasi olarak taniyordum ben. Bendeki cicegin tohumlarini fransaden getirdim ve bir sene evvel tohumlarini saksiya dikmistim o sene cikmadi sandimki olmuyor gecen yaz aniden saksilardan birinde bir yesillik bilemedim ne oldugunu ve sökmedimde birde bakayimki cicekleri acinca aksam sefasi ve asil inanilmaz tarafi bir dal üstünde üc ayri cesit renk. kirmizi, seker kirmizi ve üc renk karisimi sari, kirmizi ve sekerkirmizi olarak cicekler acti. inanki gözüm gibi bakarak tohumlarini topladim ve bu senede ayni yerden yine cikiyor bakalim kac renk cicek acicak, ciceklerini acinca siteme koyarim sizlerde görürsünüz.

Böyle bir çiçek olduğunu bilmiyordum , daha önce hiç duymadım ama büyülendim. Filmi izleyemedim ve çok üzüldüm. Verdiğin bilgiler için çok teşekkürler… Şimdi her yerde ararım ben ezan çiçeğini…

We call it ‘THE CANDLE OF THE NIGHT’ and you know why.. :-)

Dear Chanit, nice information; toda! So, if anybody wants to use this flower for these herbal uses, is it easy to put something together? I have seen some drugs using it as an ingredient, but nothing homemade. Do you know anybody using it?

benan, aksam sefasi ile ayni sey mi inan ki bilmiyorum. yoreden yoreye bazi bitki, cicek adlari degisebiliyor.
tohum degil de fideden edinmeye calismak en iyisi herhalde. belki kesme cicek disinda gercek cicekcilik yapanlarda bulmak mumkundur? dedigim gibi biz Erdek’ten bir dosttan edinmistik, simdi Mersin’deki evimizin bahcesinde var. Yani bir cok iklimde bulunabiliyor. Cok da kolay yetisiyor ve cogaliyor. Sorusturmak gerekecek herhalde.
